I’ve heard it said that the only thing wrong with Christianity is Christians. While that makes me smile a little, it also makes me sad, because I know that the pain it communicates is real. The playful commercial below is powerful because many of us have been “ejected” from “Christian” communities.
But we should remember that the “problem” with Christianity is not in its theology. And I, for one, believe that theology should be developed and explored. For me, theology is a way of “seeking” as much as “believing.” It is a process of developing and exploring questions and remaining a bit skeptical about answers. Skepticism is not the same thing as cynicism.
I’m a liberal, progressive Christian. And while many people inform and influence my faith, no one gets to define my Christianity but me. No one gets to tell me that I’m not a Christian. That’s a powerful freedom; but like every great freedom, it comes with significant responsibility. Indeed, faith is a journey and thinking is required.
